Unofficial FaB PvE: Let's Party!

August 30, 2023 - Nathaniel Dalton

One of the core designs in Unofficial FaB PvE is to go on an adventure with your friends. But what if you are in the middle of a campaign and a friend wants to jump in for a night? The main design of this is to make sure you can!

How does the design allow for this?

Part of creating the Market Quests is to allow your party a way to go after the pieces of armor that you want. But it also creates a wonderful environment for a new player to jump right in and have access to necessary equipment. The primary benefactor is the nullrune equipment that you will want to have pretty early on for that fantastic fight with Vynnset as a part of Into Darkness - Chapter 2.

Another design choice is that you get to create the PvE deck. Is that level just too difficult for your party? Replace a few reds with blue and you lower the cap. The creator of the deck really gets to have that DM feel where they decide what your party will have to overcome. Because of this it was a conscious decision to use the same deck for each campaign (Bright Lights campaign will use a new deck that is not Shadow.)

What if I'm just not feeling a hero halfway through a campaign? Start a new hero! The primary idea being that you are encouraged to switch it up a bit.

Party Level

On some occasions simply allowing you to change the PvE deck isn't enough. Once I build the PvE deck, I don't like the idea of changing it. When you have the balance of the PvE deck, it's best not to disrupt it. Because of this, there will be some scenarios that will slightly change depending on your party level.

What is your party level? It's the average of all of your levels together. What this allows is for low level (or high level for that matter) to come in and out of play while also keeping it fun and interactive. It also allows an extra level for design when a small tweak can make it impossible on lower levels but too easy on higher levels.

Conclusion

As more Scenarios are created, Party Level is something that has the potential to become more prevalent. I want to be able to accommodate the ever increasing power level as your heroes become stronger! Into Darkness - Chapter 3 is the first scenario that will take advantage of the party level mechanic.
